ABOUT THE ARTIST
Alexander Hyland is a self-taught artist whose passion for drawing and painting has been a constant since childhood. Growing up in a working-class town where art was not encouraged, he initially trained as an engineer but soon realised that path was stifling. Seeking a way to create while making a living, Alexander turned to tattooing—a craft that not only provided financial independence but also allowed for deep artistic exploration.
Working as a tattoo artist, in an intimate setting between two human beings, has only strengthened his fascination with humanity and the human form. Through tattooing, Alexander has traveled the world, developing a heightened sense of observation and connection. These experiences have profoundly shaped his practice as a portrait and figurative painter. Working from life, memory, and sketches, Alexander’s paintings are an unfiltered investigation of embodiment, presence, and emotional depth. Each portrait is not just a likeness but an intimate study of the person before him.
